Step 8: Coaching Yourself To Greatness

I received an email last week from a woman inquiring about coaching. She questioned the cost of coaching, and wondered what people can do when they are not able to afford a coach. This is a great question, and one of the answers is “coach yourself.”

Coaching is an important part of personal development. If you can’t hire a professional coach, you can “coach yourself.” There are many things that people can do to develop themselves personally, and they don’t always require an outlay of cash:

Read one hour per day in your chosen field or in the area of personal development, or both.

Because most people read very little, you will become an expert in your field in just three years. Your local library can provide most of the books you need, and they are provided at no cost to you.

Listen to audio tapes, or CDs, in your car.

If your commute to work is 15 minutes one way, then you will be in your car for 125 hours per year. This is the equivalent of three 40-hour work weeks. Imagine what would happen if you turned your car into a “university on wheels,” and invested that time in your personal growth and development. Many libraries have books on tape, as well as audio programs in various areas of personal development.

Identify your values, and align your life around those values.

Many people’s lives are not oriented around their values, and they are frustrated trying to determine why they aren’t happy, or aren’t reaching their goals. When you are expressing your values, you are being true to yourself. Pursuing goals that aren’t in line with your values leads to frustration. Living in alignment with your values leads to fulfillment.

Attend courses, workshops and seminars regularly.

The design of such materials requires hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of hours to create. When you attend a seminar, you benefit from someone else’s efforts to distill the most important information on that subject. Although some events can be very expensive, many are also quite reasonable.

Surround yourself with support systems.

Getting independent, objective feedback is a great way to fuel your personal growth. Built-in accountability is another benefit to such a structure of support. Create a mastermind group, or find a friend who is also interested in such an arrangement.

Develop the habit of extreme self-care.

Treat your body as a temple, and it will support you in producing extraordinary results in every other area of your life. Exercise regularly, in the form of strength training, as well as cardiovascular workouts. Drink lots of water. I know half your body weight in ounces sounds excessive, but it isn’t. Finally, give yourself the gift of solitude. Enjoy quiet time every day.

Keep a journal.

Keep a permanent record of what you’re noticing in your life. This could be a gratitude journal, where you record what you’re grateful for in your life. Or you could record events—daily happenings—in your life. Jot down observations about what is occurring around you. There is no wrong way to write in a journal, and the process can be incredibly rewarding.

Design your ideal life.

If life were perfect, what would it look like? What would you do, be and have if you could wave a magic wand, and make it so? What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail? Your ideal life is contained within your answers to these questions. Begin today to paint the picture of what this ideal life would look like.

Create a plan to get from where you are to where you want to be.

You know where you are currently. And you’ve designed your ideal life. Now determine what it will take to get from Point A to Point B. Write down everything that will have to happen to make this a reality. What will you have to do that you’re not doing now? Who will you need to meet? What support structures will need to be in place? When will all this take place?

Just do it.

At some point, you will need to “jump.” It will not always be comfortable doing so, yet it is only when you move outside your comfort zone that breakthroughs can occur. This is where fear usually steps in, and puts up that big wall in front of you. So climb over it, go around it, dig under it, or knock it down. If you continue to take action in the direction of your ideal life, your fears will eventually go away.

I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating. The best investment that you can make is an investment in yourself. Make the decision to invest 3-5% in your own personal development, and “coach yourself. Soon you will find yourself living your ideal life!

Step 7: What We Think About Most Is What We Become

In life we get what we ask for. Now you surely say that it isn’t true. You say you ask for freedom and happiness but all you got was a feeling of imprisoned. Why is that? Well firstlt let’s have a closer look to how creation works and how our subconscious mind works. Everything that exists is created in someone’s mind. Everything starts with a thought. A thought is an energy. Energy wants to manifest itself.

A lot of thoughts in the same direction will, with certainty, manifest in the outer world. This is the process of creation. We are created by the same process. We use this process of creation all the time, often without knowing it. When we are not conscious, then we are like most people and use this power to create automatically which oftentimes leads to a negative life. We have negative thoughts and get negative results. Once we learn how to think positive thoughts, we will get positive results in our life. How come?

Our subconscious mind is like the earth. It does not interfere with what we sow. Earth does not say : “I have enough of these roses, it’s every time the same thing, instead I am going to make potatoes from the rose seeds this time!” The soil does not say : “Bah I don’t like red flowers, I will turn the red into blue for these roses!” The earth does not interfere. Earth is patient, works in silence and gives us exactly what we put in it. And we KNOW that! We know we will get exactly what we put in the earth. When we put yellow flowers in it, we don’t expect them to be red when they blossom. When we sow roses in the garden we don’t expect onions to come out in spring! And yet that’s how we react in life. We sow onions and expect roses – We sow negative thoughts in our mind (onions) and expect good things (roses) to manifest!

We fool ourselves!

And most of the time we blame others for our harvest. We look for who can possibly be at fault (usually we blame our parents or our husband/wife for the things that go wrong in our life). And then we cry and say we don’t have any luck in our lives. We look at our neighbour and think he’s lucky because he has roses in his garden, and we wonder what we did to the world to deserve only onions in our garden! When the mainstream of your thoughts are negative, let’s say 85 %, then the outcome will be negative 85% of the time. Your predominant thoughts root themselves deeply in your subconscious mind, which executes exactly what you put in it – like the earth. It is like a computer. When you type into your word processor on your computer : “I am stupid, I am fat, I am ugly, nobody loves me”, are you angry with your printer when the paper comes out that says “I am stupid, I am fat, I am ugly, nobody loves me”?

Do you throw a shoe at your computer and yell at it that it has a fault? No, because you know you put that information in it and your computer is merely following your instructions. The output matches exactly the input. This is how the subconscious mind works. If you don’t like the output, change the input. You get exactly what you ask for or better put – you get what you think about all day long. Don’t be angry with your life. You are not angry with the onions, are you? You are not angry with your computer, are you? Instead of being angry, learn how the process of creation works and learn to get positive results in your life. Start thinking positive thoughts.

Think only thoughts you wish to see happen in real life. Use meditation techniques like Holosync or the law of attraction as taught in the wealth beyond reason course. Learn to think only of what you want. And while you do this, be patient. One day you will harvest what you sow, and just as the earth will give you back what you put in it so will your life. It is never too late to begin. Just wait and see.

Step 5: Power Of Affirmations

Affirmations are spoken statements that can be of a positive or negative nature. In the popular sense of the term they are spoken commands made purposefully in order to change some aspect of our life. In order to fully understand how affirmations work and the science behind their use we must first look at the way our minds work!

When we are born our brains are like empty computers waiting to be fed information. As we grow our peers act as our programmers, they supply us with the knowledge which we channel through the conscious mind into the subconscious (our hard drive). The subconscious mind is the biggest hard drive ever developed – it stores everything we come in contact with and by no means is all of this information of a positive nature.

All that we have heard, touched, smelt, tasted and seen are stored in the recesses of our minds. The subconscious mind holds on to this information until we need to recall it. For example when you were young your curiosity lead you to investigate your surroundings. When you approached a substance that was dangerous, such as fire, your parents or guardians would most likely have rebuked or scolded you if you ventured too near the flame. Perhaps you may even recall an incident when you were physically burned. Your subconscious mind then began to relate scolding (or pain) with the intense heat of the fire and would therefore feed the feelings of the scolding incident back to you whenever you got too close to fire again, thus acting as an early warning system.

This is the mechanism used by our brains to learn. It is also the same method employed by the mind in every situation. The subconscious mind has a tendency to emulate what it sees – it tends to replicate its environment. This is why so many people find themselves in similar relationships and situations that they saw their parents in while they were growing up. Most people also hold very strongly or similar views of their parents.

Think of a time when you gave yourself praise. What words did you use? Do you use the same words that your parents or peers used when they were praising you? The same is applicable when you scold yourself.

Watch your internal dialogue. Look at it closely. It takes diligence to change the way you think. When you notice yourself thinking a negative chose to think the opposite. This way you neutralise the negative thought. Now the think the positive thought again! You have just reversed the negative thinking in that moment and remember you only have this moment. No other time exists! You are in the NOW!

The whole point of affirmations is to convince the mind that what you are repeating is the truth. As you verbalize your desire you will find negative emotions and contrary statements entering your conscious awareness. You must deal with these negative thoughts as they arise in order for your affirmations to work! Many people use affirmations with EFT or The Sedona Method in order to eliminate the negativity that comes up as a result of affirming something that feels untrue.

During your normal day daydream about what might be. Imagine things the way you wish them to be. If you catch yourself thinking “this is just a daydream – a fantasy” then stop! Think the opposite. It is not a daydream it is your reality. Now think it again. Release the resistance as it arises in whatever ay you can.

If you just repeat affirmations with no feeling, or worse, feeling that it isn’t true, then you are actually affirming the opposite in your own mind! This is why some people find their situations actually getting worse when they work with affirmations. You must release the resistance by creating the feeling that the affirmation is true.

Bob Doyle goes into this approach indepth in his wealth beyond reason audio & video courses. I have found that affirmations will only work for me if I use EFT or the sedona method.

By creating the feeling of ‘having it now’ while repeating your affirmation you will begin to retrain your subconscious mind to think positively and you will ultimately begin to consciously create a life that dreams are made of!

Step 4: Take Mistakes & Failures As Lessons

One of the main reasons that may hinder us from reaching our innermost goals and desires is our inability to be flexible.

This fact may be hard to swallow, but it’s true. We do everything we can to eliminate any type of suffering in our lives, yet challenges and pressures can bring out the best in us.

If you have been burdened by mistakes in the past, learn from them, forget about them, and move on. Some people tend to focus on how bad their lives have been due to these mistakes. As a result, they remained stuck in their miserable lives.

Treat your mistakes as lessons, and apply them as learning references in your future endeavors.

So what if you invested in a business and you lose a ton of money? In this situation, some people would remain deeply discouraged for a long time that their personal lives are being affected negatively. They can’t eat well and they just stare at the ceiling all night long, thinking how this bad incident happened. Furthermore, they would probably vow not to venture into new opportunities again.

You don’t have to be like them. If you’re afraid to fail, then you risk all your chances to achieve your goals in life. Try again; but this time, be more careful and use your past mistakes as guide maps.

Look at it this way. If you try, at least you get a 50% chance of getting what you want. But if you did not try at all, you have absolutely no chance of attaining your desires in life. It’s a no-brainer.

But when you try, make sure you follow through. I’ve met so many people who have accepted my proposal to write reports for me, but most of them would stop right in the middle of their work and quit. They have the drive to start, but they lack the motivation to go through all the difficulties. Yes, this is another fact of life. Those who persist may have some hell of a time at present, but they shall have the last laugh.

Let’s fast forward into the future. Let’s say you did try, you followed through, and you succeeded. Congratulations. So you became wealthy by reaping the fruits of your labor. This does not mean you’ll stay in that situation for good. Problems may rise again, so always be ready to adjust to the current situation. The only thing permanent in this world is change.

If you need to sacrifice something for a better cause, then do it. If you have to miss your favorite show on TV or if you have to deny your friends’ invitation to go out on a Saturday night so that you can devote more time to those activities that will lead you closer to your goals, so be it.

You may encounter difficulties. You may receive criticisms. You may even be regarded as being “different” or “strange” by other people. Don’t let them discourage you. Just keep on striving, and success will be yours for the taking.

Step 3: Understanding The Law Of Attraction

You are not alone if you want to achieve success with the law of attraction. Although there is a lot of information concerning this many people still fail to get any results when they try to consciously use it. The Secret introduced this great universal law but fell short in its attempts to show us how to use it effectively to get results every time!

I’m sure you just want to find a way to finally get this law to work in your life to create the life you desire and to gain the things that you have dreamed of having. Yet, no matter what you do it just does not work out in the way that you would like it to.

Well, there is a ton of evidence to suggest that the law of attraction is real and that it works every minute of every day. In fact you can see evidence of this in your own life if you care to look.

Step 2: Goal Setting

An ordered life is one of the most assured methods of self-improvement. The saying “tidy desk – tidy mind” is also certainly true but only a small part of it. It is important that you order your life in such a manner that allows you to do everything you need to, when you need to do it. You should also be able to effectively ensure that you become happier and more content as well as progress with your career, make new friends and anything else you want in life.

While work is important, you should always make time to spend with your family and a little personal time. This personal time could be an excellent opportunity to take up a physical hobby.

Exercising helps to clear the mind and produce chemicals in your body that are essential and often lacking. Modern living involves greater working hours and less personal time. Inevitably this has led to less interactivity.

Always set goals for yourself to aid in your progress. Increasing the amount of exercise you do will only usually be beneficial or successful if you have a reason to do it. If you simply want to get fitter and stay healthy then set yourself an achievement.

If you currently walk 1 mile a day then aim to walk 5 miles a day. When you are walking 5 miles a day, consider if there is any way you can improve this further.

Time with your family and friends is also essential. We are social animals by nature and so human interaction is not only natural but it is healthy and pleasurable.

Taking up a sport with a friend or group of friends would combine exercise with interaction and be perfect. Your friends may turn out to be the extra motivation you require in the event of difficult times.

Step 1 Letting Yourself Free: Take Control

When you get right down to it, time management is really about managing your actions. We all want to use the process of time management to allows us to perform more actions in the day, getting everything done that needs to be done and giving us time to do the things we enjoy doing. But time management isn’t a magical cure for getting the actions done that you need to do. It’s simply a tool. A very powerful tool when used correctly, but still just a tool.

For example, you might learn all there is to know about time management – read countless books, listen to CDs, and maybe even attend a few training courses or seminars. But unless you take action to put what you have learned into practice, it will be time and money wasted. And wasting time, as we both know, is one of the worst things you can do.

On the other hand, perhaps you do decide to take some action, and start to do some of the things you have learned. But only half-heartedly. Maybe you create a to do list at the start of the day, but then never refer to it. Or you organize all your existing files, but just throw any new papers into a single pile. Or you do a few of the exercises you have learned, but never do anything with the results you come up with.

But perhaps the worst thing that can happen when using the tools time management offers is to follow the actions you have learned, refer to the information you write down, but then simply not get anything done. In the case of a to do list, perhaps you draw the list up for the day, then just procrastinate on tackling even the first task. You may not even do it consciously – looking back on the day, things just always seemed to “come up” (although if you are following good time management advice, that excuse shouldn’t apply any more!)

If this is happening, it is possible that the issue isn’t time management, but more an issue of motivation.

If the tasks are part of your job, perhaps the work no longer interests you and you need to find another area to work in. If the tasks are for yourself and are related to your personal goals, perhaps the goals you have set for yourself aren’t the correct goals for you? You may have written those goals down because you thought you should, but it’s not really what you want.

Of course it may just be that you didn’t realize you were procrastinating on doing the actions you needed to do, and that realization spurs you on to get everything done!

Ultimately, time management comes down to taking action and applying the methods you have learned to plan your activities, then taking action to do those activities in the most efficient way possible. Everyone can do it – even you!
